Spring is here and that means we have more sunshine and that means more outdoor activities, increasing our need to stay hydrated. Drinking more water is a no brainer. We all know that we need to drink more water, especially as the weather warms. But, if we’re being honest, water can get… boring.
With a recent abundance of citrus thanks to my local market and my monthly farmers market box, I added a few of my favorites together for a refreshing way to get my water in. I added fresh basil, white grapefruit and lemon to filtered water and put it in the fridge for a refreshing drink when needed. If you have an abundance of fruit you think you won’t be able to eat your way through before it goes bad, just add it to water!
In a previous post I shared a recipe using citrus and made Grapefruit Shrimp Tostadas, check out the recipe here.

While citrus in water isn’t a brand new concept, it’s a delicious way to get creative and drink more water. And if you suffer from a Diet Coke addiction like I do, flavored water can help curb those bubbly cravings. Case in point, C hardly drinks water and when I have a gallon of this citrus water in the fridge, he drinks it all up!
If you’ve never made your own fruit water here are a few steps to get you started with some of my favorite flavor combo’s.
-
Fruits and Citrus
Most fruits and nearly all citrus are delicious in water. Some of my favorites are blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, watermelon, raspberries, pineapple, lemon, lime and grapefruit of course.
-
Gather Fresh herbs
Mint, basil, rosemary and thyme pair well with most of the above fruits and citrus. Get creative and try out what you think will be delicious together, that’s part of the fun!
-
Gather Fresh Veggies
Veggies??? Ok, just cucumber.

Decide on Vessel
Do you want to create individual waters or something from a pitcher? If you want individual waters, mason jars are perfect or even if you have individual water bottles or tumblers. I like to do mason jars because once the additions are added to the water they are not only delicious, they are beautiful to look at and dare I say an Instagram worthy object..?
5. Cut additions and add water
Simple. Cut up your fruit, herbs and perhaps the lonely veggie, cucumber, place in jar or pitcher. Depending on the fruit, I like to muddle the fruits and herbs. Just like you would a mojito! Add cold filtered water. Ice optional.
6. Storage
Make sure to keep your fruit waters in the fridge. I promise it prevents the additions from going bad or tasting strange. They last for about 3-4 days. So drink up!
Try out my faves, Raspberry + Lime, Pineapple + Mint, Lemon + Basil. They are so good, I hope you like them. Try out your faves and let me know what you’ve tried!
L+S Tip: If you decide to use white grapefruit make sure that you peel off some of the rind because it is a tad thicker and more pungent of a taste than with a red grapefruit variety.

the idea of adding basil is genius.
I will feel so "zen" drinking this… and of course in my mason jar so everyone can see 😉 😉

I need to remember to do this more with my water to jazz it up a bit (plus it will make me drink more each day because it is flavoursome!).
